Position size calculator

Position size is how much you buy so that, if your stop is hit, you lose only the amount you planned to risk. Most traders risk 0.5% to 2% of their account per trade.

Enter your account balance, the percent you want to risk, your entry price and your stop loss. Add a target to see your risk-reward ratio and potential profit. It works for stocks, crypto, forex and futures prices, and needs no account.

How the calculation works

Dollar risk = account balance × risk %. Risk per share = entry price − stop price. Position size = dollar risk ÷ risk per share.

So if you risk a fixed share of your account, a wider stop means a smaller position and a tighter stop means a larger one. The loss at your stop stays the same either way.

How to read the results

Shares / units is how many to buy. Position value is what that costs at your entry price.

Risk-reward compares the distance to your target with the distance to your stop. 1:2 means the target is twice as far as the stop.

Fees and slippage are not included. Leave some room for them, especially on short-term crypto trades.
